Is it possible for classmates to post a picture in the message forum?

Two answers for you:

1) In the current forums yes, but only if they know how to put in image embed code. Which would probably stop 99% of people from doing it.

2) The new threaded forums, now in beta, will be available on your site shortly, and in these forums it's far easier to embed an image.

It's really quite easy. Just Google "html tutorial", and on the first page there will be numerous free tutorials that will teach you how to do this. It's a simple tag that you need to add.
