Sending emails to Alternate Emails

I placed email addresses in 4 of the 1966 classmates profiles but when I sent a broadcast email they did not get sent one. After I sent it I noticed it said they did not have a working email address listed. I had placed the email addresses in their Alternative Email address area and not their Primary. Do you think that is the reason? I did not place it in their Primary in case they finally came along and tried to sign on with their possibly current or different one.
