Would it be possible to have the Home Page background have an Opacity feature so the background that we see on the sides will slightly show through?

At present, a huge proportion of our users don't even have browsers which properly support CSS transparency, so this is unlikely to happen soon, but I'll add it to the wishlist.

In the mean time, Donald, you can 'tone down' your background picture in PhotoShop or GIMP or whatever photo manipulation program you use. I have visited a lot of Class Creator sites and many of the background pictures are very distracting.
