try reducing the size of the photo to somewhere < 1000 pixels wide and see if you get better results.

Sorry - you're working with a real rookie here - how do I cahnge that - shows something like 1275 X 1650 - when I scan it is set to 300 dpi.

You would use a photo editing software. If you use www.irfanview.com, it is free to use and then you would load the image, choose IMAGE/RESIZE and change the width to 1000 pixels, then resave the image as a new file so as to not overwrite the original.
