On the Subscription page, there is a monthly option, but when I click on Add Time, there is not. Is 1 year the minimum subscription length now? If that's the case, then I guess we'll be going to the free site with ads.

At the bottom of the page is the "Continue monthly billing. Your site will remain ad free.". For "Add Time", yes it is for yearly increments, but to continue with monthly billing, just use the radio button at the bottom of the page. Monthly billing will happen automatically if your credit card information is still correct, but if the credit card expires, your subscription will change to "Free (ads)"
