How can I temporarily disable our site so it can't be accessed?

You could make all the pages inactive. I have no idea what happens to make sure you can still LogIn I'm assuming you still want access to the site?? One compromise method is to deactivate all links except the home page. However, replace the home page with a generic message stating the reason for the site not being "up". With no active links, users will not be able to navigate to them unless they have bookmarked them. When you are done, restore the prior home page and turn all the pages (links) active again. CC might have an alternate method here?

Why would you want to do that?

We have an internal battle going on ... there are some who want to limit to a select group the size of the gathering (very controversial ... like high school all over again!). So we may need to rethink how the site will work. Another question ... can our domain name be changed?

the only way to change the domain name is to purchase a different one. There is no way to disable the website except to disable all the links.
