What am I doing wrong?

I copy and paste a monthly feature for that month on the bottom portion of my home page. This one is for the month of December.
When I do this it blows out most of the page and leaves a large blank space toward the top of the page?

I would consider reverting to your last saved copy and attempting this again. Then, I would enter your monthly content into an announcement that you can turn on and off easily. This will also help when trying to locate code issues that are likely the source of the page blow out.
