I was wondering if there was a functionality that admins can use to find out where a member is logging in from. for example an IP address, which will definitely be able to help ID the location of the member.

The system doesn't log IP Address per login. Presumably members are logging in the majority of the time from the location they've listed on their Contact Details page. Thus on your home page when you click "Show Classmates on a map" you should see the location of where your Classmates log in.

You can also track your site activity with Google Analytics under your Preferences page. This will show you the exact IP addresses of those viewing your site.

There are also a variety of third party plugins you can display on your site that track location of visitors, such as one you can see on this site.

I use www.StatCounter.com

It works similar to Google Analytics. Just visit the www.statcounter.com website and sign up for free and copy their Embed code to your PREFERENCES page. You will then be able to see the IP Address of anyone who views your website.
