I suggest changing “Post Response in the message forum to “Post Message”. Many take response literally and think they need to continue the thread, with no way to begin a new thread.

I totally agree! When asked why my members don't use the message forum, their reply is always that they didn't want to respond to the last post. Seems like an easy enough fix to change that button.

We changed the button to Post Message.
