I've searched but couldn't find my issue. I'm new so be gentle!

The site lists ** in blue indicating that a classmate is deceased. After I enter a name into the "In Memory" section it applies the ** to the classmates name but it isn't blue it is the simple black **. How do I make the notation blue.

The "**" isn't supposed to be blue and there isn't any way to make it blue. If you want to have a ROSE ICON next to their name, just go to Edit Site Pages, Edit IN MEMORY, then click EDIT next to the classmate's name and add obituary information.
