Under a classmates name, it has "Follow Jane Doe". So, when someone makes a change to their profile another classmate will get an email. Is there a way to get rid of this function? THANKS

That is a feature of the system that cannot be disabled.

Question are you clicking on Classmates Profile an the word FOLLOWING is next to the individual name. IF So click on the word FOLLOWING it will state Stop Following name then YES or No. Is this what you are looking for
