I've set up a student named "Guest Pass" so I can allow complete access to the site for friends who are considering ClassCreator for their own classes. I don't want "Guest" to show up in the profile updates box. Is there a way to do this? ..and I probably should ask...was there a better way to do this?

That's a fine way of doing it, but I'd set your "Guest Pass" member to be a Non Displaying Guest Member. That way "Guest Pass" can never show up in your Profile updates box.
