Some classmates not receiving notifications of new posts.

Why are some of our classmates not being notified suddenly when they have been receiving notifications for years? When they go to the "NOTIFY ME" link in the left margin, it still indicates "Immediately" or "Daily". (It's almost as if the "Never" option has been suddenly selected, but it has not.)
