Is there an easy way to access the file vault, see what all is in there, and delete files to make more room? TIA

Open any page via the Edit Site Pages link. On the second row to the right in the text editor click on the closed chain link. Then click on File Vault. In the upper left hand corner you can select either the files or images. In either case right click on what you want to delete and make that selection. As far as I know this has to be done one item at a time as I'm unaware of ay way to make mass deletions.

I vaguely remembered being able to delete multiple files/images, so I tried in both the file and image vaults. I can control-click multiple files to mark and highlight them, and then, pressing the Delete key asks if I want to delete all those I'd marked. I had chosen several that I knew were no longer needed, and it did delete them.
