Is there something special to do in order to get the option to see a map of 'Where we Live'?

Go to Edit Pages and click on Home Page. The "Where We Live" option is there, you just need to click to activate it

Is there a way to display this map only behind the log in? This is a huge amount of private information to be displaying publicly.

Yes, you could take the code and put it on a separate page that is PRIVATE. Use "View Source" in a browsers to copy and paste the code. Search for "Where We Live" Here's a page I quickly made for OUR site, Could make it prettier.

To amplify on what John Ralph said above, under Edit Site Pages > Edit Home Page, in the section Right Modules, under the Logged In* column, click the button for "Where We Live."

@Scott Moore -- I appreciate this helpful direction. To be clear, I did select "Logged In*" and it had no effect. Confirmed three different ways that the map was fully accessible to family members without access to the site as will as in a private browser window. Very concerning. Everything I looked at indicated that the page needed to be set server site by Class Creator to logged in only. Only class creator can do that. Because classmates were asking for an easy way to see where others are -- but absolutely no one wants their information out in public -- I have been messing with creating my own version on a page that requires a log in. I like the example @JackVermeulen provided, but will need to be checking multiple times from multiple directions to confirm the privacy of the information before I am willing to proceed again. Very disappointed that the "loggin In*" toggle is not functional.

Two other possibilities to check: 1. When you toggled "Logged In*" did you click on SAVE CHANGES at the bottom. Otherwise, the change will not take. 2. After you toggled "Logged In*" and clicked SAVE CHANGES at the bottom, did you log out of our site and see if "Where We Live" disappeared from the right module on the home page. If you don't log out, "Where We Live" will still be there. On our site, when I toggled "Logged In*", then SAVE CHANGES, and logged out, "Where We Live" disappeared. So, following all the steps works for me and I believe the "Logged In*" toggle works fine.

Yes, just turn Logged In ON and it will not show at all. Verify you are logged out by clicking on an active locked profile and see if you can view it (or try to edit your pages). If you are really logged out, neither of those will work. You don't have to click "Save", just toggle the box. Indeed, if you try to save, the msg "no changes made" will show up I might just make my little tests a separate link vs on the side. Side gets a bit BUSY Modified Test Page a bit prettier.

Have turned the Logged In toggle ON and it is still visible without logging in. Have verified that I, and several other testers, are logged out by clicking on an active locked profile. When logged out we are unable to view any profiles as we locked them all to begin with. Also, of course, when logged out we are unable to edit our pages. I have clicked "Save", after toggling the box. Indeed, the msg "no changes made" will show up. To repeat, we are well and truly really logged out, and most functions requiring being logged in do not work. HOWEVER the link to the map leads to a map in still fully visible state. Not sure how much more clear I can be. Not cool. Very much a not cool security breach. Obviously I have disabled the map. Still require ClassCreator to move the map I cannot delete behind a log in or to delete it entirely. And I am still unable to do that myself. How do I reach a human to say this one last time with finality -- instead of continuing to hear that I have failed to set a toggle which I have multiple times explained that I have properly set? Thank you.

I never did see the map on your page Turn it active again so we (the one's in this thread) can see if we can see the map. That will help confirm which one is true. If we can't see it, then there is something else going on. It would be unusual for only your site to not work. We have three here (counting me) that experimented and verified that turning Only Logged in works. The MAP never shows up.

I never did see the map on your page Cool No - And you will not, as I have stated above, it is a SECURITY BREACH. Not cool. I have sent the link to Class Creator via email, because ......it is a security breach. I will not turn active again so you or anyone one else can see it for the same reason. If we can't see it, then there is something else going on. Agreed. It would be unusual for only your site to not work. We have three here (counting me) that experimented and verified that turning Only Logged in works. The MAP never shows up. But yet the site has created the MAP and a link to that MAP. I have asked multiple times that ClassCreator delete that MAP or put it behind the log in. Unusual things happen all the time. This is one and it is easily confirmed by checking the email I have sent to support at classcreator. Help me understand who receives emails sent to support at classcreator and why it is okay for that person to ignore those emails when they are marked urgent. Similarly, who (fails to) respond to the phone messages left for ClassCreator? Thank you.

If you turned it on for just a day - or less if we all say we visited, I doubt anything bad will happen. It's not like people are scouring your site looking for someone. They'd have to CLICK on the link, then manually follow the map, etc. I have two other sites and it works there as advertised. So that's FIVE sites that work. The way to solve problems is to contribute. Find out what is really going on. If WE can't see it, then the problem is clearly on the user's end. Simplest way to figure this out. Your site has a HUGE (and I mean HUGE) custom set of code added on the home page. Do not think this is created by CC. I've never seen a giant script added by CC. Typically it's hidden in custom CFM. Open and look at page source. Go to the area that Says: < !-- EE76: wrap+underline email links, blue->green buttons, rewrite login footer -- > Appears to be related to reunion stuff and added by one of your members? Looks like that is you- "Lisa Sept" and "2 Oct 2026". It is odd. Looks like you put that code in Preferences/Analytics since it appears everywhere.

Indeed, let's focus. The easy fix is to see if WE can see what you do. Very odd response here. It could be YOUR code that is the reason behind the issues. How in the world somebody would be interested in that map and what they could possibly gain is beyond me. What in the world is all that code doing on every page? Do you think that with thousands of users that yours is the only one with this issue? Let's see if ANYBODY that is reading this has this problem. Simple problem solving takes cooperation. I had a few coding mistakes that showed up on another site that I did not think off and it messed up a page of theirs.

I have answered very clearly that I won't be turning the map on again. I should not need to defend that decision. Everything on our site, with the exception of a help file about how to upload post-graduation photos, is and has behind the login. That's a decision my class felt strongly about. I have sent the needed information about the leak to ClassCreator via the support at ClassCreator email address. I have also used the support form in ClassCreator's support area. I have also called ClassCreator's help phone number. I have received no response to any of these. And I have asked who is responsible for these points of contact for ClassCreator. Why not?

Hi Lisa, I don't know how to solve your problem of displaying Where We Live behind the log in, other than the suggestions I have made, but I'd like to address a point you made in your initial Oct. 2, 2026 post: Please go to our site and click on Where We Live, which is not behind the log in. Click on a state and a name. You'll likely see a lock icon on the far right of the name. That means you must be logged onto our site to see any information on the classmate. The lock icon is created by a classmate when the classmate joins the site, under the Profile section, which lets a classmate choose whether to block his/her profile vi vsibility to the public and search engines. Almost every classmate who joins chooses to block his/her profile visibility. Even if they don't block their profile visibility, their most sensitive info, their contact info, is automatically blocked by Class Creator and viewable only by administrators. Therefore, when you click on nearly any name on our site under Where We Live, you won't see any information on the classmate other than an individual from my class lives in a particular state, because you are not logged onto our site. Similarly, if Where We Live on your site was not hidden behind a log in, I would be unable to see any information on a classmate on your site when I clicked on a name under where We Live until I was logged onto your site, except that an individual named John Doe who graduated from your school in 1976 lived in a particular state. If even the information that an individual in your class who lives in a particular state is public concerns you, then you are better off leaving your Where We Live module behind a log in, once you figure out how to do it, and retain your ultra-private approach to your site. In short, in my opinion, Class Creator does a good job of protecting the privacy of classmates who join a site. Our site takes a different approach than you do regarding public visibility of site pages. We deliberately wish visitors to see the list of Classmate Profiles, as well as other pages, so they will be encouraged to join. For that reason, every page on our site is publicly viewable. That has resulted in 81% of our classmates joining our site. We'll never reach 100%, as some classmates do not use a computer and others are not interested in their high school days. But, having our site as visible as possible opens the possibilities for more classmates and guest members to join, which we like. Good luck in achieving a solution which works for you.

Wow. FC, Jack and Scott. How very certain you are that my custom code created a problem. Just as sure as you were that the problem did not exit initially. ClassCreator identified the problem quickly once they saw my queries. Support@ is not the fast track, fyi. Their programers fixed it and another leak we were not comfortable with, and did so permanently. Our code runs only on edinaeast1976.com pages, never appeared on the map page, and has never contained any classmate’s name or location. The map stayed public after we trimmed our code, and it closed as soon as Classcreator's programmers changed the page on the server side. I appreciate that ClassCreator allows customization. My group would not be able to use ClassCreator or recommend it to others if not. I won't be responding further to this thread.

I clearly never said we were sure. Just that it was possible. Your code DID run on the home page where the map appears. No one said it never existed. We just wanted to see if WE could see the same thing. It would be interesting to have an explanation. PS: Home page Code has been significantly changed. Only 1/3 of the original code remains now. Hi Scott and anyone else wanting to know what we tweaked. I'm not certain if the custom code played any role but it appears that if you had the map link turned on with the check box and the had checked the logged in only check box and then turned then unchecked the check box as well as the logged in only it was causing it to appear if you already had the link to the map. It was ignoring the fact that the map link check box was unchecked and showing it because logged in only was unchecked. That is my understanding of what I discussed with the programmers - the extra step we added is to make sure the that if the map link check box is off that even if you have the link it will not display the map. It should not have been displaying it even if you had the link so ultimately it is a good item to catch. Jessica

Thanks. Not sure exactly what combo did this yet. I turned logged in off/on and also show map on/off trying to see if the map showed when not logged in. I always started over when doing this. It sounds like if one already had the Map showing/logged in and then changed the options without starting over, the map would still show. So we probably never would have seen the map since it was never active since we never would have been logged in. Yeah, it would have been figured out a lot easier if we could have seen it active.

Thank you, Jessica, for explaining the cause and thank you again for the essential fixes. Scott, thank you for asking, and for your helpful suggestions earlier. To elaborate slightly on Jessica’s answer in #23: once Class Creator’s support staff and programmers saw the problem, they changed their map page on their server so that it stays closed whenever “Classmates on map link” is unticked. They also fixed a second issue for us. We had set every classmate’s profile to Block Profile Visibility by default, yet the profile pages were still showing the classmate’s name and town in the page title to visitors who were not logged in. Those pages now show only “Restricted.” Jack, as I noted in #19, we had already trimmed our code, and the map stayed public afterward. It closed only when Class Creator changed its own page hosted on its server. The map is a separate Class Creator page, not part of our home page, and our code never ran on it. Your response in #21 may have missed these points. I do value cooperative problem solving, and I appreciate everyone who took the time to offer suggestions in good faith. When something is a security risk, though, my first responsibility is to my class. A public page does not need anyone to go looking for it: search engines and data-collecting programs crawl public pages automatically, and names, towns and photographs gathered that way cannot be taken back. Our class has chosen its locked-down approach, and other classes choose to keep more open sites. I respect individual difference, and have no wish to challenge anyone else’s decision-making any more than I expect ours to be challenged. As I have said before, I am grateful for Class Creator’s openness to careful, well-tested custom code. Thank you all.

This is what we are actually talking about. It is NOT directly about the optional where we live map on the home page right side options but instead about a detail in the MAP data. We were discussing the MAP showing on the right side, not a LINK and not the data on the MAP. The custom MAP page was created AFTER I showed a demo page how that works to make it require a login. Response #3 Two things happened. One I don't know about but could create an issue is if the MAP WAS public and then changed to only logged in. IOW, it was visible for a while to everyone. Then it could have been cached by a crawler. Second issue is that BROWSER history would have that link, so even if one logged out, that MAP link could show up. And it would work The MAP code itself has nothing to do with the options on the Home page about logged in or not. The sample I made using the code from the Home page and copied to another page has nothing to do with the option in the Home page about turning it on or logged in. That option can be turned OFF and the MAP code still works using my example as an independent page (not the home page). The option that has been fixed, is showing Classmates on the MAP. That was never discussed per se. I never tested that since that was never mentioned. If that is turned OFF now, then just having the code does not work for the MAP displayed. The subsets of that code still works - AKA the dropdown lists giving names only. If a page was ever public, then a yes it could have been detected/cached and it would show up on a search. That has happened a few times in the past when a page was not locked down. It takes a while for it to evaporate from a search. And yes browser history remembers pages visited even if logged out. So this was about either/or both a page was not locked down at first, then restricted and the link would show up on a search OR browser history. And the MAP should not show anything if it is disabled. Would have shown up instantly since we never could have ever seen it and thus would have no inkling of the link to the map regular users could see.

Jack, the map itself was the subject from my first post. I mentioned the right-hand box only to say that setting it to Logged In did not protect the map. I wrote about the map being visible to people who were not logged in: #2: “Is there a way to display this map only behind the log in?” The setting’s name was also in this thread from the start. The very first post, in 2021, asks about “the option to Show Classmates on Map.” The advice in #4, #5, #7 and #8 was to set the right-hand box to Logged In. I had done that, as I said in #6, and the map page itself stayed public. And as I said in #6, “Everything I looked at indicated that the page needed to be set server side by Class Creator to logged in only. Only Class Creator can do that.” That is how it was resolved by Class Creator. Every class’s map, ours included, is the same Class Creator page: map_classmates.cfm on classcreator.com, built by Class Creator for each class number. It is not part of any class’s home page. On custom code: the page that leaked was Class Creator’s own page, map_classmates.cfm on classcreator.com. Loaded directly from their server with no scripts running, it already contained the names, and our code was not on it. You are right that a public page can be picked up by search engines. That is exactly why I treated it as urgent. Class Creator has told me they found no sign that it was indexed. Thank you all. [Edited the paragraph beginning with "The advice in #4...." to more accurately describe the responses to my actual question.

Better clarification so users don't get the wrong idea that somehow their map data has been freely distributed. “the option to Show Classmates on Map.” to us meant exactly that. The options on the Home Page edit that set this in Right Hand Modules. We all interpreted it the way I stated. You didn't even have a separate page for showing the map. IOW, it had to be the right hand option that was available since there was no other link. You only added the new page after I showed it could be done. It was all about BROWSER history. If someone did not have the link, they could not find it. Only YOUR logged in users were capable of getting there with their history link. IOW,it was sort of a mute issue. We NEVER would have found that link since we were never logged in. This would have been revealed in that many nano-seconds. I think you might be misinterpreting how CC works. Sure the map_classmates.cfm is just CC, but the page it is accessed from IS not. That's where your code is included. That's like arguing about any of the cfm pages, like class_classmates.cfm. IOW THIS is on that custom page (that also has your code) Only now because it's on a separate page, logged in is controlled by the page setting vs CC actually verifying one is logged in. That's easy to demonstrate by just clicking my test link. ANYBODY can click that and not be logged in - even though I set it to logged in on the options. I am very puzzled why this is being distorted to what actually happened. ALL of us interpreted the issue as a right hand module display issue since that's all that was showing. If anyone else cares, they can copy the code in my test page to only let logged in users view it if somehow they displayed it on their home page without being logged in.

For anyone following: the map opened for people who had never logged in, in fresh private browser windows with no history. Class Creator has fixed it, and sites that never turned the map on were not affected. Jack, you are mistaken about our Where We Live page. It is not a copy of your nice map demo. It is a list of classmates by state and general region, with no map, written from scratch for our class and visible only to logged-in classmates. It does not use Class Creator’s map code at all.

ONLY if they had the link. Where in the world did they get the link? So yeah, if you SENT THEM the link, it would work. That's sorta obvious from the sample page. The map is a COOL feature though - A list of where they live is not the same. The simpler list is also in my demo page.

I am responding once more only for clarity, for anyone trying to follow what actually happened. Jack, at first I thought we were simply talking about different things, since you kept referring to the right-hand map box, which, as I said from my first post in #2, and again in #6 and #27, was never what I was asking about. But your recent comments contradict what Class Creator’s support staff wrote in #23. In #28 you said only our logged-in users could reach the map, but it opened for people who had never logged in, and Jessica wrote that the map page “was ignoring the fact that the map link check box was unchecked.” In #31 you said it “never was an issue as presented,” while she wrote it “should not have been displaying it even if you had the link.” I do not think that helps anyone following this thread. Here is the sequence of events. Class Creator confirmed the cause and the fix:
2. The map page, map_classmates.cfm on classcreator.com, stayed open to anyone with its address, without a login. That included people who had never logged in, in fresh private browser windows. 3. Setting the box to Logged In did not close it, and no setting in our admin area controlled it. 4. Class Creator’s programmers confirmed the problem, then changed their map page on their own server, so that it now shows “This page is unavailable” whenever the map link is unticked. They told me the change is permanent, and since every class uses that same map page, I believe it applies to every iteration of the map, but only Class Creator can confirm this. 5. Class Creator has told me they found no sign the map was indexed. Jessica was not certain whether custom code played any role, but the cause she describes in #23 is a settings check missing from Class Creator’s own map page. When that page was loaded directly from Class Creator’s server, the names were already in it, and our code was not. I will absolutely not be responding further. I suggest you address any additional questions you have to Jessica. I am not able to be any more clear than I have been.

This is getting a bit odd. You are misinterpreting my comments. Did you click my sample page? That works for EVERYONE. And it uses class_classmates.cfm. IOW if anyone got the link, it works. That's even true RIGHT NOW and it's set for logged in only. IOW, it works NOW even if you are not a class member or logged in The interactive MAP display is really one of the best I've seen. So easy to use and the visual is terrific. That gets an A+. The original question was "Is there a way to display this map only behind the log in?". And that was following the PRIOR comments about the RIGHT HAND map "Is there something special to do in order to get the option to see a map of 'Where we Live'?". That implied that you wanted to display it only if a member logged in. We ALL thought that was what you wanted. All clearly pointing to the RIGHT HAND module. And ALL of us interpreted it that way. Nothing that followed explicitly talked about the MAP options, instead Logged In or not. The MAP link (active if Classmates on map link is checked) is a completely DIFFERENT option vs the logged in options. I explained that it now will not show if the MAP is unchecked. I have never tested that before since that was never explained as the problem. It now will not display if that is unchecked - as I noted before. The initial question led ALL of us to think you were talking about the RIGHT hand module. There was NO link yet. Short story: We all thought it was about the right hand display. All combinations I tried work fine. Now and then. The MAP where users live display is very cool and I guess you removed that. I am inferring that was changed to not work now if unchecked. If ALL the options are now removed, indeed nothing will show and you can't get it. But that was always true. Except that if was active before (as you just explained), then yes the link would still work - IF you had the link - still works that way even if you are not a member. We would never ever have seen that link if it was set to logged in only. That's what I was explaining to the other users. There is NO problem and never was, unless it was made public. OR if you gave the link to somebody. Otherwise how in the world would they get the link? If users do not want the MAP to show where members live, uncheck that option or enjoy how well it works Make as TEST site and play around with this. You will see that it works as I described. I tested all of the variations to see what would happen. IF you have the link for the stock system, you can get the map to display. Only by turning off the MAP display will nothing show for ANYBODY - including members. I could not be clearer than I have been.

Here's an example from OUR site with the "Where WE live" showing only for logged in. Click on our Home page and you will NOT see it. There is NO map to see. And you will never find it. And YET this is how you can see this by me giving you the LINK. You would never know this link if I did not give it. THIS IS THE LINK for anybody that shows the MAP shows for anybody WITH THE LINK. I have Classmates on map link enabled of course. If that is disabled, this will not work. This is literally the same MAP as the one in my test sample on a custom page.
