We sent out 255 emails yesterday. One bounced back and another came back as a Mailer Daemon. Why is our "read by" counter reading 255 today? Two, obviously were never opened and/or read.

Anyone having a similar issue?

Hi Marsha,

Read by means opened by - it does not track open rate by specific classmates - it is more of a general stat to let you know the emails were received and read. It is possible for a classmate to have an alternate email address and open the mail there as well. It is also possible someone opens the mail to read later and then opens it again. We stop the total number of reads at the number of sends because it was causing more confusion than it was helpful. If your mail was read 300 times it would simply mean someone had reopened it for one of the above reasons. Unfortunately it was being interpreted as meaning the mail had gone to someone outside the list or was looping and sending again when it was just someone opening it again.

While most folks probably read a notify email and then delete it, knowing how it worked in the early days we had to smile when we saw counts at 103%, 108%, and even 300% when it was a Happy Birthday email to a single person.

Bottom line though, is that with the old way or with the numbers capped, we still don't know how many people read the notify emails. But we do know they were sent, and that some - and probably many - read them. And until lately, that used to be good enough.
