I have had some of my Classmates complain about getting notices about Profile Updates when a Classmate makes changes and they go to see what changed and can't find anything obviously different. I too find that the Classmate has made some minor changes (like spelling or wording) and when we go see what is new we can't tell what the changes were.

I find this happens especially when a new Classmate has joined and initially updates his Profile and then comes back a time or two in the next few days to update again.

I was wondering if any other Admins here has had any feedback from fellow Classmates on this problem on your website?

Could there be a checkbox added like us Admins have so the Classmate updating his Profile can choose whether or not to let others know about his Profile Update change? Maybe that would cut down on unnecessary Profile Notices going out....or would that be counterproductive?

We have on our task list to screen for insignificant updates and also to highlight what was updated since the previous Profile save. This is currently behind several new featuers we're working to get out, but it is something that has been raised previously. When we get to this Task, while it will be better overall, it won't be perfect. In discussing this several scenarios were raised where it will be difficult for our system to tell the different between significant and insignificant. But, while not perfect, it will be better overall (i.e. will trigger less notifications going out due to simple typo changes and things, and better flagging of what actually changed).

I found a resolution for this that is working fairly well. I added a question to the profile section, "Updates I have added". Classmates are encouraged to note the changes when they post them. for example: "Jan 25: added favorite song"

This is off to a slow start. Right now, I'm going in and adding the information for most. Now that our group is getting bigger, I am also adding, "Jan 25, 2010 - New Classmate" as well. I think if I keep this up for a while, classmates will get used to looking for the update information, and begin posting on their own! ..at least I'm hoping!
