Widgets not being pulled in nor google analytics

countdown clock for http://www.aahs1970.com/ is not working and I don't think google analytics is being pulled in either (harder to check with the way it's done)Cool

Refreshing a page (F5 or reload) redirects to "What's New"

Not minor or big issues but will be if not fixed.

Edit: I can see the google issue (not the right website) but people need to be told that they can no longer track page usage. The second issue is that some of us use that area to override CSS and other things. So disabling the whole thing can undo anything special a admin has designed.

I have a rotating cube with our mascot on our website that does not show up on Class Connection.

I have two dancing gifs that are working on class connection.

Makes sense. gifs are just regular graphics, not widget (embed code).

I don't think any videos work either (same thing).

Flash: most likely just a server mime type issue. If not I'll let you know.

Page refresh: App is iframed by Facebook. Not sure what's possible here.

Analytics: Bigger issue than it probably sounds. App is an iframe already, and for the moment we have some pages, such as admin content pages, coming in via iFrame (so it's an iframe within an iframe). That won't always be the case as we move toward makin iframed pages native. Complicate this though by the fact we need to put our own FB app analytics code on here, and I'm unclear yet how this works (or if it can at all) with other Analytics code on the same page. Needs further investigation. The app developer Analytics code tracks thins like "spaminess" of your app, specifically the content being sent up to the FB globe. If you're reaching a high spam threshold you definitely want to fix that *beffore* Facebook takes issues with your app. There's a lot to look into on this one.

Animated GIFs: Jack is correct, no issues here.

About the mime type: I was wrong. Had nothing to do with that. From IT: "All pages on FB require https. I.E. third party plugins that are http will not display. Change any third party plugins to https. If the third party does not offer https, the plugin cannot be used on FB."

That's sort of what I though from the way my https to my site worked out. Nothing worked done that way. That is fixed now to go directly to our registered name. Thanks.

Now I hope that the 'fixes' I need are not going to interfere with anything for regular viewing (as in the browser putting up messages). I'll have time later to check out the basics.

YouTube is OK but the others people use are probably going to be a mixed bag.

My site also has iframes. They both are https supported (one is on CC, the other is a weather one also https)

Asking people to fix all this stuff that won't show is .. err ... I'm at a loss for words hereConfused

iframe within iframe works though - I think I checked that a long time ago.

Edit: believe it or not the government weather site is NOT https supported, so http://www.weather.gov/ will not work for us.

I also checked a lot of the common widgets people are using and those also are not https supported.

Recommend CC make a BIG announcement describing what has to be done for widgets and any external scripts for FB. I see a lot of posts about missing pieces coming up if that is not done.

Describe how to verify ahead of time if they will work or not. Paste the main object reference link into a browser adding https and see if the browsers complainsIdea Here's a common one that will NOT work http://www.accuweather.com Also most countdown clocks won't work or one picture cube I saw (there's more than one).

Hey Jack, I'll do it, but I'm remote for the next few hours. You wanna post something in the main Class Connection forum describing how to fix these? That would be super helpful if you would. If not I'll hit it. Thanks, as always.

Note, regarding your "asking people to fix all this stuff" comment: We have absolutely no other choice. Most people aren't going to be at your skill level, granted. Nonetheless, if they were smart enough to embed third party plugins, then I suspect most will be smart enough to either fix it (if it even can be fixed) or pull the plugin entirely. With Facebook forcing https there is simply no other option.

I'll try to explain. Yup, it's the only way. This might be a good motive to get scripted solutions too and get away from all the flash code.

A lot of people literally just paste without paying attention to what's inside. Why should they? So I differ on you in that regardShocked

Given direction, for sure they can learn. Maybe a temporary sticky topic where admins can gather. A lot of the widgets are very common.

Maybe the top topic lists all the URLs that are NOT https capable. In alphabetical order.

Makes sense.

No I'm with you, scripted solution makes perfect sense to me.

Thanks.

Just found this thread while looking for something totally different. Am I reading a decision that somethings simply will not work within Class Connection or is this old enough that 'there's a FIX for that'?

The post I wrote Sunday, May 4, 2014 at 12:07 AM

On the alumni site: www.mchenryalumni.com, I added a widget to an announcement on the homepage today. It is seen on the site but NOT in Class Connection.

I checked the source code. It is there. The announcement does not make sense without the widget.

Here is a screen shot of both in two tabs next to each other:

You need https support for any javascript or flash widgets. Your weather also will not work on FB as coded. It's not a 'decision', just a byproduct of https 'rules' otherwise you create a security hole.

Right now there's a bug in FBCC - Visit a class is not showing (or was disabled?), so I can't check your site.

Right, Jack. I saw and noted that 'visit the class' is missing yesterday. I believe it has been longer than just yesterday as I recall my intention to report it but something detoured me. oops.

You need to enable it under Preferences. Some admins asked for exclusivity on FB (i.e. stay in own class only). Now admins can choose to open it up, or stay self contained.

Missed that one, Brad. Thanks!

Jack, I added the s to GIVE FORWARD widget - that one works in Class Connection. It does not work for the weather. Now to decide... add a notation that it does not work in CConn or remove it. Not liking having to make this choice.

Don't understand that at all (exclusivity) Wink

Can't find this in Preferences. All I see is the FBCC enabled thing and nothing else as an option to reinstate the visit class thing.

Should have defaulted to enabled though - not disabled.Exclamation

Click Preferences from the app.

That also makes no sense (besides not defaulting as it used to be). Should ALL be together, SAME options CC or FBCC.

So who exactly wanted this "exclusivity" thing? Sounds like a few emails contrived this somewhat needless option (IMO) since there was never a discussion on this forum re.

Just rough guesstimates, for every forum posts there are 2 contact form submissions and 1 phone call. So I'd say roughly 25% of things that come through here come in via the forums.

Still doesn't make sense Brad. Not a single thing was posted here. So that's odd. Secondly, even using those numbers, it can't be very many of the population. Things like this shouldn't be done .. poorly ... with no input or discussion.

CC needs to take a class on how to do valid sampling. What CC does is 100% the wrong way to do this. See why the Truman - Dewey prediction went wrong. It's all about sample bias - and that's what just happened.

But most of all, the default implemented is just wrong. I can think of a LOT more things that are a LOT more important than this change that still makes no sense at all. Things need to be SIMPLER not more complicated for FB. Enuf said there.

Agree on the default. Smile

We're working on a list of items every day, so I suspect many things you may have on your list are on ours. Would you like to email me and send me your list? Anything not on ours I'd be happy to add, or can tell you where given items are in the priority. Just took a quick look, we have 54 pending Class Connection tasks, and about an equal # in the Class Creator queue.
