I changed the email preference for the new year, but it was after 1/1. Did an email go out to the class at that time, or will it be generated next year? I want to send out some emails re-inviting classmates who have not joined yet, but dont want to overwelm them with a bunch of emails.

No, it did not go out. It will go out next year. Go ahead and use your "Email The Class" function to send your own email.
