New Home Page Edit Area
Posted Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at 7:59 PM

We have completely revamped the home page edit area. You'll see quite a few changes next time you edit your home page. Everything should be pretty self explanatory, but the 3 main things to note are:

1) You can now control the order of your home page right hand modules by clicking the little red and green arrows.

2) You can now display right hand modules to only logged in Classmates (such as the Where They Live box).

3) We have added an "Options" column to make it easier to configure options for those modules that have them, such as your Poll module, Donate module, and Who's Online module.

Special thanks to Kyle Erickson for helping us come up with some of this.

Beautiful! I had to rethink what we're allowing on login only. Really good selling points now, what they can do & see if they join.

But on the Map for Where They Live, the window title came up "South Pasadena High School Class of 1800...." I know we cover a lot of years on our multi site but didn't think we went back quite that far! California was still part of Mexico back then.

Fixed. We changed the title to be whatever you entered under your Edit School/Logos link.

Are you guys still working on the "Logged In Only" and "non-logged in" announcements?

Great feature! thanks!

My announcements are covering up some of the boxes on the right hand side. Suggestions?

You need to do one of two things:

1) Make the width of your third party objects in your Announcements no more than 345 pixels wide. Any wider and they will not fit into the space available, as you've noticed.

2 Move the large third party objects into your regular home page content area instead of your Announcements Board, and then set your Announcements to appear first on your page, and your home page content second. This will allow your large objects to fall after your right hand modules, thus there will be no overlap.

I like the layout of my homepage content first then announcements, so I changed the width of the 3rd party embeded objects and it looks better, but there is still a little overlap.

I don't see anything overlapping in Internet Explorer or Firefox, so I'm assuming you fixed it.

When I logged-in and went to the homepage I can see the announcements still overlapping just a little on a couple of the boxes that I activated for only members who are logged-in to see. Any other suggestions?

also, when a classmate logs in do they get automatically directed to the homepage so they can see the boxes that are available? I'm assuming it's different for an administrator because when I log-in it takes me to the page where I can choose different options.

Thank you!

When Classmates log in they are taken to a page that shows their options, messages that are waiting, etc. like you are. Many Classmates stay logged in though, so it's common for them to already be logged in when they access your home page.

Yes, your Announcements box is too wide for the space available on the page. This is happening because you've inserted third party objects that are wider than 345 pixels wide. What you want to do is edit those Announcements by viewing your source code (same way you pasted them in there to begin with) and every single width in the code you see, reduce any #'s larger than 345 down to exactly 345 pixels. Anything larger than 345 wide will cause your Announcements to overlap your right modules.

If a classmate is deceased, and appropriately identified, it is properly reflected on the "Drop Down List" in the deceased count. However, unless you remove their address they will be reflected on the "Classmates Map" display. Apparently there is no test for being deceased before mapping is displayed.

I think that the Mock-Up (which is gone now) said that "LOGIN BOX*" would not have a check-box in the "Logged In Only**" column. I am not sure what it means to have a LOGIN BOX only show up when you are already logged in.

Thanks Kyle, you're right, that checkbox is not supposed to be there. Will have programmer remove.

New home page edit area is very good. Suggest background music for few seconds on clicking on the home page.

What we're going to do is pop in an option to spawn third party music players in a separate window as the home page loads. This way Classmates can listen to music the entire time while browsing the web site, and have full control over the player, volume, etc. in the separate window.

The new poll that is available on the home page: I can't see any way to check the results without voting myself over and over again to open the results window. With the surveys, we are able to see results but not with this poll. Please tell me if I am missing something on this or how to access results.

Thanks, Sue

You can't vote over and over again. It's impossible. You have to be logged in to vote, and you can only vote once. The moment you've voted, the poll switches over to live results for the duration of the poll. I.E. you'll see the piece chart for now on.

By the way, I logged in as you just to be sure everything is working fine, and it is. The only thing you can see is the live pie chart poll results. Thus you can't possibly have voted more than once. If you ARE voting more than once, please tell me how you're doing it, as I can't see any way you possibly could be.

These are all great features - thanks!

Will we eventually be able to control & rearrange our LEFT HAND LINKS as well?

Thank you guys!

Yup! You've got some control over your Customizable links already of course, as you can build your pages in any slot. But, yes, you'll eventaully be able to slide custom and default links around very much like how you can rearrange your home page right modules now.

We plan to start on this after the launch of integrated Live Chat, Instant Messaging, and Community Photo Galleries. I'll have a more specific ETA when those features are out.
