We had someone sign up today who was a girl with a common name in high school and today someone entered the website and signed up a new name with her picture with a male's name in Africa. The name doesn't make sense nor does the city, "state" and telephone number. This is someone we have not been able to get in touch with. Is it possible that someone is messing with us?

We have had a similar problem on our site.

So, did our girl have a sex change operation? Smile How do we prevent this from happening? And how did it happen in the first place?

This is called hijacking. Fortuately it's rare. When this happens you should delete the entire account immediately, and then re-enter the Classmate's name. What these people are doing (typically from Africa) is joining the system to see if there is anything else they can do in there, such as get ahold of credit card numbers, or send mass spam email. Fortunately there is no such thing possible inside the Class Sites, so these people are usually disappointed and go away pretty quickly. It makes them go away even faster if you immediately delete anything they've done.

Frankly, hijacking is the one security issue left in the Class Creator system that we haven't addressed well enough. Yet, that is. We have a new "Preferences" area coming up shortly that will render any attempt at hijacking useless. As this problem is rare, this extra level of security will be optional, and can be turned on or off as needed. If anybody would like to see how this will work, click here to access the new Preferences area thread and enter any comments there.

I had something happen tonight. One of our classmates is not happy about the reunion and has written some not so nice stuff on her profile. Then tonight deleted it and is putting in weird names and emails in her place. I keep deleting it and have emailed her and asked her not to do this as this has taken me a lot of time to create. My question is can I block her from logging on? I have deleted her profile will that do it?

If you remove her name from your site, yes, she will not be able to log on again as her. But that will not stop her from assuming the identiy of another one of your Classmates who has not yet joined your site. It's sad people will stoop to doing this sometimes... This is exactly why we're creating the new security feature to deal with hijacking. Once this is live, and you see something like this happening, you can simply turn on the new security until the person goes away.

I know this is important folks, but so are a lot of other things happening right now. Rough estimate on the new hijacking security feature: 5 weeks. Until then, the very moment you see an individual assuming the name of one of your Classmates, delete the whole account immediatley, and then re-enter the Classmate's name. When the hijacker sees their "work" being deleted immediately they usually tire of it and give up. We've seen several cases of hijacking before, but none of them persisted very long.

Wow! I can't believe someone would be so childish to do something like that!

I'm not sure if mine is fraudulent or not, but two people keep posting rude comments about a third student and using that person's name and porn in the same sentence. I can't delete them fast enough, I deleted the one person, because they had already answered their survey with porno and beer as their answers and said they hated school. The second person I am waiting to see if they post again after I deleted their post and then I will delete them. If you could speed up the security measures, especially the ability to moderate any posts to the site, that would be great. They have a attacked me on the forum for deleting messages as well.

I sure as heck don't know... Another day, another challenge.

Aimee, I hate to have to recommend this, but you may simply have to turn off your forums until the new ones arrive. And that won't be until the end of September, give or take a couple weeks. So worst case scenario, mid October. Any time we spend dealing with the functionality of the current forums would only delay the launch of the much improved forums. Thus I can only ask you to do one of the things I recommended in the other thread about this, or simply turn off your forums altogether until the new ones are out. What a shame -- you know what they say about one bad apple.... Sad
