I have noticed that some people have "upcoming Birthdays" on their site. Where in the heck is the link to activate this? And im actually pretty computer literate!

Check the home page options in the edit mode.

As a rule of thumb, if something appears on your home page, then you edit that element by clicking your "Edit Site Pages" link, and then clicking the "Edit" button next to Home Page.
