I've built my class site using the long name that class creator gave us without registering a domain name. I'm considering purchasing a domain name for our class, but my concern is what will happen to the existing site? And, more specifically, will the classsmates who have already registered have to re-register with the new domain name?

Adding a domain just adds another way for your classmates to get to the same site. All of the old links will continue to work and nobody will need to redo any of their work.
