Looking for feedback
Posted Friday, October 9, 2009 at 12:23 AM

After borrowing some wonderful ideas from others here and adding some of my own, I'm interested in any feedback or suggestions on our site.

Comment added 2/11/2010: After posting the request above, I left the pages on my site open (with no password required) for a period of time. Then I turned on the password for most pages...to encourage my own classmates to sign up on the site in order to see everything. I'll be happy to guest access to other admins to take a look.

Thanks,
Paul

wow, very good. PLEASE tell me how you imbedded the info in the GRC links. That feature will help me a lot. I recommend you add color to the slide bar. It is grey and hard to recognize/see it at first look. I love the year book portraits. Your highlights on Che Guevara is a question as to why you devoted any space for him, will others be offended? Just a thought. I love your website.

Thanks Susan. If you're talking about the first two links on the GRC Links page, I used hyperlinks and pointed to files that I uploaded into the file vault. I'm not sure how to change the color of the slide bar, but I see you've done that. Care to share? The story about Che Guevara is a rotating feed from the PeopleHisory.com...Cuban revolutionary one day, James Dean video the next. Thanks for the note.

You have done a good job. In fact you have given me a few ideas to use on our web site. In particular Susan's coment "PLEASE tell me how you imbedded the info in the GRC links"

On your home page, if you want your content to fill the open white, in the center of your page, limit the content to no wider than 420 pixels.

Great job on the success of Discussion Form.

Most forms, including ours, it's difficult to get classmates to participate and make comments.

Keep up the good work. classmate Jim

for both of you, the original version of the message forum is a much better one. You can ask the tech team to give that one to you. check my site, it is much more friendly.

you change the sliders by selecting COLOR options in the admin memo bar. at the top of the next page, it gives you color options to select.
I dont know how to do the hyperlink, is that where you use the source button and copy and paste?

To "embed" a stand-alone file on your site (a pdf file, etc.), try this:

- On the page you want to edit, click the "link" icon.
- On the Link Info tab, click the File Vault button.
- On the FCKeditor window, click Browse in the lower right
- Locate and double click the file that you want to "embed" on your site.
- Click Upload.
- In the list of files on the FCKeditor window, click the file you just uploaded; then click the insert button that becomes visible next to the file.
- Click the Save Changes button.

Paul your site looks very nice. I have two suggestions: One is maybe some music on your memory page. Or something to add a little more warmth to it. You can check mine out it's not password protected. Second I am a stickler for privacy. Log off your site and enter it as a looki lou. Go to your classmate profiles and look for those without padlocks and see what you can view.

The embedding part I haven't gotten quite right. How do you change the link to the name? (I just got told this last week...short term memory is gone.)

Also...we don't use the forum because it is so hidden on the side. How do you get more people using it? That's why I want to put a link on the homepage that would encourage people to just pop over. Thanks K

Karen, there are at least two ways to do this. First, before you create the link, if you type the text you want the finished link to say and then SELECT that text before creating the link, then the selected text will become the link.

Second, if you have created a link and it is "http://..." for the text, then you just edit the announcement and view SOURCE CODE. Then you will see YOUR DISPLAYABLE TEXT GOES HERE. Anything you put between the and the becomes a link. This means images, whole paragraphs, single words, etc.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Kyle...
Actually I'm positive that you sent me that message last time.
Let's See---For Example
Step #1 Copy desired link
Step #2 Create new announcement
Step #3 Type message including key words that will be used for link.
Step #4 Highlight key words.
Step #5 Clink on link icon; paste link; save; save page
Step #6 Check to see if it worked.

I actually got it to work, but I am not sure I really followed your directions. But like my junior math teacher said...you do math like Bruce Dillenger...it's not how you're supposed to do it but it's right.

Karen, we have had pretty good participation with the discussion forum when we use the "Email the Class" feature to let people know a new topic has been posted. We've also noticed that participation in a topic helps generates more participation...one comment triggers another and so on. So for a few threads, I asked my fellow committee members to post responses to get the ball rolling.

Good luck,
Paul

Your site looks great, especially like your GRC Links page, great idea, one that I'll use.

Thanks Ava. That page started out as "GRC Links" and I changed it to "GRC Links +" when I started adding stand-alone documents and other items in addition to the Internet links. The stand-alone document with teachers was necessary to help people to take the teacher survey...hard to recall all those teachers from back in the day. Another stand-alone doc on that page has typical reunion responses and humor...it used to be its own customized page but got bumped into a Word doc when I needed the customized page for the "Then & Now" slideshow. I could use a few more customized pages. Smile
