BBCode Question: Forcing Window to Open when Using URL or LINK Tag
Posted Friday, November 6, 2009 at 1:04 PM

Is there a way to modify a URL or LINK tag (with BBCode) in the discussion forum to force the link to open in a new window? I read something online that said the user's browser settings determine whether the link would open in a new window. I also read that I could force the link to open in a new browser window by using:

# Your link text

...but I got an include error when I tried that.

Anyone know if there's a way to force the link to open in a new window when using BBCode?

Thanks,
Paul

I haven't tried it while in Class Creator, but you might try right-clicking on the URL and then choosing Open in New Window from the drop-down box. Perhaps you have already tried that, though?

Rick/Brad, no need to dig into this one further. After trying a number of things that didn't work, I decided to change from the BBCode/BBML format to the Visual Editor format in the discussion forum...and discovered that Visual Editor gives you the ability to create a link that opens in a new window. I had to go back and modify some of the older messages in the forum after the change, but it wasn't too much work.

Charlotte, thanks for the note. Some users know they can right click a link to open it in a new window...which works well. I was trying to *force* the link to open in a new window because the document being opened from the link in the first message is needed to reply to the thread...and I didn't want users to leave the forum when they clicked the link.

Short answer (and I think I also read this recommendation here somewhere) is to choose Visual Editor in the forum preferences rather than BBML.

All is well.

Paul

Just an FYI, for most classes here BBML isn't even an option in Forum Preferences. Only the initial threaded forum users here who started with BBML still have that toggle to switch back and forth between editors.

Also, do I just put a # in front of my hyperlink in the html code to make another window open up when the user clicks on the hyperlink? I didn't realize when I first read that post from another user that I might want to do the same thing - force another window open when a user clicks on a hyperlink. Rolling Eyes

Here's how you open a link in a new window:

<a href="http://wwww.yourlink.com" target="_blank">Click here to go to my link in a new window</a>
